San Leandro Police name suspect in fatal stabbing of 15-year-old girl

Police were searching Saturday for Henry Leon, a 19-year-old Oakland man they have named as a suspect in a fatal stabbing of a 15-year-old girl in San Leandro the night before.

Leon was believed to be a suspect in the stabbing that was reported around 6:20 p.m. Friday in the 1900 block of Pacific Avenue, police said.

Officers found a girl suffering from multiple stab wounds to her torso, police said.

A responding officer and paramedics performed life-saving measures but they were unsuccessful and the teen succumbed to her injuries, police said.

Leon was believed to be driving a dark blue 2004 Cadillac Escalade with black rims and California license plate No. 5SBE608, according to police.

Police said Leon was in a relationship with the victim and was the father of their 9-month-old baby.

Police were asking the public to notify authorities with any information about the suspect.

This was the city's first homicide of the year.

Man, woman found murdered nearby Lake Merritt

Oakland police were investigating Saturday morning how two people who were found dead inside a car Friday night were killed.

Oakland police Officer J. Moore said a double homicide was reported at 9:34 p.m. in the 200 block of Athol Avenue.

Officers said they made the discovery during a late welfare check after two people failed to show up to work.

Police didn't say Friday night that the two people found inside the car were the two people they were looking for, but an investigator told KTVU that one of the missing was believed to be a retired San Francisco police captain, but a spokesperson from the Oakland Police Department told KTVU Saturday morning that the missing person's connection to the SFPD could not be confirmed.

Minutes before 8:30 a.m. Saturday, a spokesperson from the San Francisco Police Department informed KTVU that the male victim found inside the car was not ever an employee of the SFPD.

The man and woman were pronounced dead at the scene by police at 10:46 p.m., Moore said.

Investigators responded to the area earlier in the day for a previous welfare check and at that time, they didn't find the bodies.

Only 15 minutes prior, a fatal shooting was reported in West Oakland.

A man found shot in the 800 block of Center Street was taken to the hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead, according to police.

There was no information about any suspects as of Saturday morning.

Police said there was no connection between the two incidents.

San Francisco police warn of pickpockets

Anyone with plans to be out and about at night in San Francisco is being warned to be on the lookout for thieves.

Police said there has been a rash of thefts of wallets, purses and especially smart phones.

A KTVU crew on Friday night spotted numerous signs posted in bars in the Castro district warning patrons to keep their valuables with them at all times.

Police said those who frequent bars and nightclubs are the prime targets of pickpockets.

Thieves are particularly looking for wallets and smart phones.

One man who fell victim said all it took was a matter of seconds.

"I turned my head for no less than 10 seconds, I turn back around and my $500 dollar Droid phone was gone," he said.

The staff at 440 Castro told KTVU it's taking steps to protect its patrons by offering a coat check.

"It's easy to lose track of where your things are," said bartender Anthony Thomas. "We've cracked down and are a lot more aware of what's going on."

Security guards at the Ruby Skye Nightclub near Union Square reportedly caught a pickpocket Monday night.

The thief had grabbed five cell phones woth approximately $1,700.

Police called the thefts a crime of opporunity.

"They're looking for the moment that somebody leaves and walks away from their belongings," said officer Carlos Manfredi.

Police said the best thing people who go out at night can do is to be alert.

They suggested using a buddy system to look out for each other.
